New Hyde Park is a small incorporated village within the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. New Hyde Park is the anchor community of the Greater New Hyde Park area. It had a 2019 population of approximately 9,712 people.
Thomas Dongan, New York's fourth royal governor, was granted 800 acres of land in 1683, including lands that would become New Hyde Park. The property was known as "Dongan's Farm." He built a mansion on what is now Lakeville Road. In 1691, Dongan fled to New England and then later to Ireland, as King James II and his Catholic forces failed to regain power in both England and Ireland.
George Clarke acquired Dongan's estate in 1715. He named it Hyde Park in honor of his wife, Ann Hyde. He eventually sold the property in 1783, and it was parceled and sold as farmland in the early 19th century. Cattle raising became the chief agricultural enterprise from Dongan's time until the mid-19th century. The expanding American West soon forced farmers into other pursuits.
In 1871, a post office opened, and the name changed from Hyde Park to New Hyde Park to avoid confusion with upstate Hyde Park. The village was incorporated in 1927 when most residents voted for its incorporation.
In addition to the village of New Hyde Park, the 11040 zip code includes the unincorporated communities of New Hyde Park, North New Hyde Park, Herricks, Garden City Park, Lakeville Estates, and Manhasset Hills - which are all unincorporated areas of the Town of North Hempstead.
The Nassau County Police Department serves the village of New Hyde Park. The New Hyde Park Fire District, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire District, and Garden City Park Water and Fire District provide fire protection for various parts of New Hyde Park.
Because of the village's proximity and a short commute to Manhattan, it is a primarily commuter village, with over 75% of the land being used for single-family residences. It also has warehouses near the LIRR station and retail districts along the Jericho Turnpike.
According to the Census Bureau, the incorporated village of New Hyde Park covers 0.8 square miles, all land. Referred to by residents as New Hyde Park, the CDP of North New Hyde Park is located in North Hempstead. It also uses the 11040 postal code. New Hyde Park borders the villages of Stewart Manor, Floral Park, Garden City, and Garden City Park.
Like many communities in New York, New Hyde Park has developed into a modern village, with an impressive median household income of $89,524. Residents have come to rely on advanced home appliances for their everyday chores. Samsung kitchen and laundry appliances are some of the most preferred devices in the New Hyde Park area.
