History

Gardena proper began in 1887 when Harrison & Pomeroy real estate developers subdivided the 650-acre Amestoy Ranch that was subdivided from Rosecrans' land. Spencer Roane Thorpe, a Civil War veteran, is credited with starting Gardena's first settlement in 1887.

Railroads put the community of Gardena on the map following a real estate boom in the 1880s. Some believe the city's name was from its reputation for being the only "green spot" between Los Angeles and the sea during the dry season. Because of its abundance of berries, it was dubbed "Berryland."

Japanese Americans settled in Gardena throughout its history. To protect itself from a heavy county tax imposed on a planned project, the community had to incorporate. The City of Gardena was officially incorporated on September 11, 1930.

From 1936 to 1980, the City of Gardena had a local monopoly on legal cardrooms, gaming establishments that exclusively offer card games for the public, from which taxes accounted for nearly a third of its annual budget. As the suburb grew, many Japanese American families moved into the new homes being built.

According to the Census Bureau, Gardena covers an area of 5.9 square miles. Over 99% of the area is composed of land. Gardena is bordered by the unincorporated community of Athens to the north, Harbor Gateway to the east and south, Torrance to the southwest, Alondra Park to the west, and Hawthorne to the northwest.
