From the 1920s to the early 1960s, another, more infamous sanitarium operated in La Crescenta. The Kimball Sanitarium, located a few yards west of the La Crescenta Motel on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Rosemont Avenue, was situated in a massive, ominous converted Victorian palace erected in the 1880s. At the Kimball, which was shown in Tim Burton's film Ed Wood, Bela Lugosi attempted to conquer his morphine addiction. Actress Frances Farmer had insulin shock therapy at Kimball after being labeled a "paranoid schizophrenic." Local citizens rejected plans to extend the sanitarium in the early 1960s, and the sanitarium was demolished. Padded chambers with straight jackets and manacles affixed to the walls were discovered by construction workers preparing the structure for destruction.
